Codex 2816, previously known as 4ap, is one of the MSS that was consulted by Erasmus when he prepared the TR. It contains the General Epistles, not just Acts and the Pauline Epistles. It has been assigned a production-date in the 1400's. It is still at Basel. It can be viewed at the VMR.

Since I'm working on a project involving the book of James, I thought I'd sift through 2816 to see if it has any unusual readings. For the most part, it has the Byzantine Text. But, besides that, there were some things that might be text-critically interesting. (Those who want to see the beginning of James in 2816 at the VMR should turn there to Image #5080-0.)

1:12 - QS instead of KS.
2:3 – ESQHTA is missing in the text but there is a colon after FOROUNTA, and another colon accompanies ESQHTA written above the line. What happened: the copyist accidentally skipped from THN to THN. The corrector noticed the mistake but added only ESQHTA in his correction, not THN ESQHTA. (Correcting from memory, perhaps??)
2:5 – BASILEIAS is written, not as a nomina sacra, but not altogether normally either. (Although considering how profusely the copyist of 2816 used abbreviations, this might have been normal for him.) It is written as BASIAS, with L suspended above the middle two letters.
2:11 – The copyist accidentally repeated MH MOIXEUSEIS, yielding a sentence that said the equivalent of, "For he who said, `Do not commit adultery' also said, `Do not commit adultery.'" The mistake was partly corrected when FO was written over MOI but this made the word difficult to read, so FONEUSEIS was added in the left margin next to the line.
2:13 – reads ELEOS (not ELEON)
2:24 – last word looks like MONHS instead of MONON (??)
3:18 – does not have THS
4:7 – does not have DE before TW
4:12 – does not have O before NOMOQETHS
4:12 – has KAI KRITHS after NOMOQETHS
4:14 – has ESTAI (agreeing with Byz)
4:15 – After ZHSWMEN, the words KAI POIHSWMEN are missing (h.a./h.t), and there is no correction
5:4 – SABAWQ is written in the margin, right next to KU; it looks like the copyist initially omitted SABAWQ after writing KU at the end of the line
5:7 – the nomina sacra that should be KU appears to be corrected, as if the copyist initially wrote CU and then heavily placed K over the C.
5:7 – A notable example of the abbreviations that appear throughout the MS: AUTON is abbreviated: au (at the end of a line) and T with superscripted \\ (at the beginning of the next line); earlier in the same verse the WN at the end of MAKROQUMWN is abbreviated the same way, and farther along in the same verse, the ON in UETON is abbreviated the same way.
5:8 – HMWN appears between KU and ANGIKEN (agreeing with 614, 1505, et al)
5:10 – clearly has TO instead of TW before ONOMATI
5:11 – OIDATE (agreeing with 1729) instead of IDETE or EIDETE
5:19 – in the text, EN UMIN is missing, but there are lozenge-dots; lozenge-dots also appear in the right-hand margin beside the line and EN UMIN is written there.

Hmm. James 4:12 looks like a sort of intersection, or overlap, or collision-point, of transmission-lines. That HMWN in 5:8 is also interesting; it has an interesting array of support.

      Yours in Christ,

      James Snapp, Jr.
