this poll does not reflect the objectivity and not precise..

most of the group members could mark 2-3 or more choices..

tatars are a part of TURKISH identity, they are TURK as much as Turkiye's Turks..

and most of the turks, including tatar turks are muslim, and they are citizen of several different countries..

so, the poll should be allowing to mark multiple choices.. otherwise, it cannot be precise..

let me give you an example,

I am half kipchak, half oguz turk and muslim, and was born in turkey but living in the USA.. so how can I define myself in just one term..?

if you give multiple choices, I will mark, Tatar, Turk, Muslim and citizen of the country residng choices..

            thank you..

                Dear tatar-l group,
I am afraid, the following voting is limiting the identities of
a person into a single category:

This is regarding Tatar ideology, what do you consider yourself?
                please choose following:
                o Tatar
                o Muslim
                o Turk
o Citizen of the country you are residing ( e.g. Russian? Turkish?)
                o Tatarstanian
                o Not sure

Ofcourse, I will not vote for this poll, because I am not a Tatar. But,
even if I was a Tatar, I wouldn't vote either. Why?
Because, we as human beings do posses several layers of identities
                in our self consiciousness.
                For example,
I have the following layers of identities in my self consiousness:

                8. Muslim, when I identify myself with the rest of the World Muslims

                this year in Germany.
                33. And many other identities that I can't remember right now?

I have these many identities and use them in different occasions such as:
                1. when I am with a Tatar, Azerbaijani or another Turkic nationality, I feel
very warm feelings as we all belonging to a broader Turkic cultural group!
                2. When I am with an uzbek, I feel also very close toward him/her even if
he/she is from Uzbekistan and I am from Turkey.
                3. I feel myself very close when I meet a Pakistani or Indian because I can
speak Urdu with them and have lived in Pakistan many years.
                4. I feel myself very close to a Tajik or Afganistani or Iranian because
I can speak Persian very well and have been educated in Persian literature.
                5. I feel myself very close to an American and act as an American since
I know the American culture very well.
                6. I feel myself close to a German and especially someone from Munich
since I lived there a long time and can speak in German.
                7. I feel myself very close when I meet a Russian since I studied Russian
language and love the Russian writers and poets and don't feel bad feelings
toward the Russians, because what bad things happend in the past in the Tsarist
and the Soviet periods were the fault of the those regimes, but not the Russian
individuals (one of my closest friend at Koc University is the Russian teacher
and we have many common interests among ourselves).
                8. I feel myself very close when I meet and Arab or Indonesian Muslim.
So, being a Turk (and also an Uzbek in narrow sense) I have very close and
deep feelings toward other Turkic groups, Muslims, Christians, Jews, and
                the trest of the world.
However, I am glad that have more than 30 different identies and I don't
narrow myself to a single identity as Turk or an Uzbek. I guess many people
are like me, isn't this right?
                Timur
P.S. I forgot to mention, I am also a "Tatar-l" group member and love this
                group identity!

                  Dear tatar-l group,
I am afraid, the following voting is limiting the identities of
a person into a single category:

This is regarding Tatar ideology, what do you consider yourself?
                   please choose following:
                    o Tatar
                    o Muslim
                    o Turk

Ofcourse, I will not vote for this poll, because I am not a Tatar. But,
even if I was a Tatar, I wouldn't vote either. Why?

I have these many identities and use them in different occasions such as:
                  1. when I am with a Tatar, Azerbaijani or another Turkic nationality, I feel
very warm feelings as we all belonging to a broader Turkic cultural group!
                  2. When I am with an uzbek, I feel also very close toward him/her even if
he/she is from Uzbekistan and I am from Turkey.
                  3. I feel myself very close when I meet a Pakistani or Indian because I can

I agree, the poll does not seem to reflect the complexity of the issue under discussion. Perhaps, it needs to be narrowed down to the issue at hand, i.e.: 1.

I agree, the poll does not seem to reflect the complexity of the issue under discussion.  Perhaps, it needs to be narrowed down to the issue at hand, i.e.:

                    1. Do you consider yourself/believe/feel that you are a Turk (NOTE: Not a citizen of the Turkish republic, but a Turk in the meaning of our common ethnicity, in a way similar to Arab, Slav, etc.) first and then a Tatar, Bashkort, Uzbek, etc.

                    2. Do you consider yourself/believe/feel that you are a Tatar, Bashkort, Uzbek, etc. first and only then a Turk.

                    3. Do you consider yourself/believe/feel that you are only a Tatar, Bashkort, Uzbek, etc.

As far as I am concerned, I would certainly put myself in Group #1, meaning that I am a Turk first and then a Misha'r, Tatar, Misha'r-Tatar, etc. I don't think, given the nature of the discussion, it would be beneficial to concentrate on other variables: religion, citizenship, etc.  What do you think?

this poll does not reflect the objectivity and not precise..

most of the group members could mark 2-3 or more choices..

tatars are a part of TURKISH identity, they are TURK as much as Turkiye's Turks..

and most of the turks, including tatar turks are muslim, and they are citizen of several different countries..

so, the poll should be allowing to mark multiple choices.. otherwise, it cannot be precise..

let me give you an example,

I am half kipchak, half oguz turk and muslim, and was born in turkey but living in the USA.. so how can I define myself in just one term..?

if you give multiple choices, I will mark, Tatar, Turk, Muslim and citizen of the country residng choices..

                    thank you..

This is rather a very complicated issue. .As you may know the new discussions on the question of national identity in Turkey brought also new questions on the agenda. According to Turkish constitution "Everybody who is bound with  citizenship binds  is a Turk". Therefore  in Turkey juridically the ethnic or religious background has no importance. In other words citizenshiph =Turk. It doesn't matter whether your ethnicity has Kurdish, Arab, Bosnian, Circassian etc. background, you are Turk. Turk is considered as upper identity. And Kurdish, Arab, Bosnian or Circassian are Lower (or secondary) identities. But some claim that 'Turk' represents also a certain group of people or its is an ethnic name  like Bosnian. Therefore the citizenship must be called not 'Turkish' but ' from Turkey (Turkiyeli)'.

If we take all these arguments into consideration another lively discussion will start. The fact is, as far as I can judge, the Turkic (which is fotr the time beeing best solution for a common name) peoples are annoyed to be called by Turks as Kazak, Kazan or Tatar, Uzbek etc Turks and their languages as Kazak, Tatar or Uzbek Turkish. Another facts is in Turkey that Turkic  languages are upgraded as dialects or idioms.

Belonging to a nation or belonging to a race are two different things. Therefore first we must find a common name for all Turkic peooples and we must be sure that all of them accept this name. Because if you don't have a common expression for a common thing, you will argue or discuss on something, which will mean something for you, but another thing for other. Then you can ask questions about kinship, race, identity etc. As from the message MDK we understand that not first and second but also a third identity exists . In his case Mishar,  but it could be Kreshen, Tipter etc

I believe we will not be able to find answers, which will be accepted by all. But still to discuss on these matters is much challenging and interesting.

I am half kipchak, half oguz turk and muslim, and was born in turkey but living in the USA.. so how can I define myself in just one term..?

if you give multiple choices, I will mark, Tatar, Turk, Muslim and citizen of the country residng choices..

                      thank you..

Nadir abyi, 100% Sezneng bela'n kilesha'm - bu buk katlauly ma'sa'la'. A'mma, if we don't discuss, who will? If we don't look for solutions, who will? The most likely answer is 'Nobody'.

Tatars are under tremendous pressure from the current Kremlin regime to abandon their faith, identity, language, culture and history. Without a strong Turkish identity and realization that they are not alone, ordinary Tatars assimilate at an astonishing rate, especially in Moscow. They don't speak the language, they don't go to Mosques, they look at the world through the "russian eyes" without even realizing it (and that's scary - these people are like 'zombies' from horror movies, they walk around and assist in brainwashing other Tatars).  These people need urgent help, "an ambulance" so to speak. An important quick-fix injection of self-confidence to these 'meskens" would be the creation of the Turkish League on the Heads of Governments level and its meaningful work on implementing joint economic, political and cultural activities (Why? Because a lot of these assimilated Tatars got where they are now due to the fact that they find the Tatar language and culture as very local, useless for practical life, "minor" as compared to the russians'. Giving the Tatar language and culture a global dimension may reverse the trend). If Arabs can do it, why can't we do it?

As far as the proper term is concerned (Turkish vs. Turkic, etc.), I still believe this is of lesser importance. The important thing, I agree, is to get all the Turks buy into the idea of single ethnicinty, language and culture.
