Shoigu characterized Shaimiev as "apolitician on the federal scale, one of the most vividpersonalities on the political stage of the RussianFederation." At a meeting in Kazan on 12 March, theTatarstan-New Century party headed by Tatarstan State Councilspeaker Farit Mukhametshin and presidential adviser RafaelKhakimov similarly pledged its backing for Shaimiev, whofaces four rival candidates in the ballot (see "RFE/RLNewsline," 21 February 2001).
