> That was a great story. Just right for Halloween.
Maybe now something for Thanksgiving
The golden duck.
Long, long years ago, there was a shoemaker in
Warsaw. His name was Lutek. He was a merry,
hard-working but very poor boy. He worked at his
master in the Old Town. The master was a miser
and he gave little money to the workers. Lutek
was often hungry and his clothes were old and
worn out. Once upon a time he visited his friend.
There were many shoemakers there: old and
young ones. They were telling stories. Lutek
learned there about a princess who had been
bewitched into a golden duck.
-"The man who find her in the basement at St.
John's - night may become a great person of
means. But such attitude needs the courage! "
Lutek kept everything in his mind and in one
June evening he decided to find the princess.
When he was approaching to the castle he made
the sing of the cross. He knew that the meeting
with the devilish ghosts was not a pleasant one.
He lighted the candle and started going along
narrow corridors. Finally he reached to a large
cellar with a small lake in the middle. Oh, my God!
In the weak light of the candle he saw the golden
duck. In a moment the duck turned into a
-"What do you want?"- she asked.
-"Nothing. Order, and I will do it for you"- Lutek
-" If you fulfil, what I will tell you, you will get
all the world's treasures. Here are the hundred of
ducats. Tomorrow you will have to spend all your
money for yourself. You can not give even a penny
to anybody"- said the princess.
-"Ha, ha, ha. It is easy" Lutek burst out
-"But remember ! No penny.... !"- she reminded.
The princess gave him a money-bag and Lutek
saw a strange ironical smile on her face. Then he
felt a little frightened.
The next day Lutek went to the town. He
bought himself a new hat and beautiful clothes.
Then he ate a lot of dishes at the inn. He hired a
chaise. In the afternoon Lutek went to the theatre
where he had funny time. After leaving the theatre
building he realized that he had spent just some
ducats. When he was going along dark dirty
streets he noticed a hunched old man. He was a
soldier without one hand. The man had two orders
:"Honourable League" and "Virtuti Militari".
-"My Lord..., I have not eaten for two days...
Help me, please..."-he held out his hand.
Lutek gave him the rest of his money. Suddenly
some lightnings appeared in the sky and Lutek
saw the princess.
-"You have broken your promise !"- she said
Then the old man said: -"Money does not give
happiness but work and health"
Lutek came back home and went to bed. The
next morning when he woke up, he did not have
any penny. But from that time everything went
alright:he became a master, got married and lived
in happieness and good health. Everybody forgot
about the golden duck. And it was good... In
Poland we feel differently: in the first place you
should help the poor man without thinking about
yourself... Then, the Lord will help you.
