Group Description

This is a group about the fantastic dance of art, tap dance! Please join and discuss!

Short history;
It is not known where tap dance started, some says it comes from Africa where people were not allowed to use instruments, instead they started to make noise with their feet and hands. But other says it comes from the brittish and irish clog-dance which was started by factory workers who weared clog shoes. A third thory is that the dance is descended form the spanish zapateado which is known since the 16th century. But the dance become famous in New York and Hollywood in the 1930 and '40 among every ethnical group and class of society, through musical movies and variety shows with stars like Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor, Ann Miller, Eleanor Powell, Sammy Davis Jr and the Nicholas Brothers (Fayard & Harold Nicholas).
Today the tap dance not so popular any more but there are still people around the world who perform the famous dance. One of the present stars is Gregory Hines who performed a classical tap number in the movie "The Cotton Club" directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the story takes place in the historical show club, with the same name, in New York where many famous tap performers used to dance and sing in the '30s.
