- Dear All,
I thought I share this point with you and ask your opinion on this.
Following some discussions at Unicode list, I came to learn that a language couldnt have grammatical rules about its writing system.
It looks as though there is not a single language in the world that has grammatical rules, written or otherwise about it's writing system, except Tamil. To me it was a shocking revelation. In contrast a language can have Grammar governing it's writing system seems to be a shocking revelation to the entire world, except Tamil.
Worlds earliest written and sophisticated Grammar of Tamil in its first chapter deals with writing system. It is also important to note that the Tamil Grammar do not deal with the shape of Tamil characters, but Tamil writing system.
What is your knowledge on this? Especially does Grantham and Sanskrit has a section devoted to writing system? I know Sanskrit was a hear say language and not a written language till recent times, but what about Indic as a whole?
