Lee Valley, a woodworking tools supplier, sells a brightly-coloured stretchy
"sock" that you can put over the body of the chuck and the jaws on a
woodworking lathe. It might fit a Taig chuck, or you might need something
smaller. It shouldn't take long for someone who knits to make one of
whatever size you need. With something like this sitting over the chuck,
the moving jaws will be more visible, and if you do get too close you'll
feel yourself being brushed by spinning fabric before you get whacked by the
      jaws.
