[Synoptic-L] Matthew 1.1-2.15 & Genesis
- Further to my earlier post. Here is a summary of the evidence supplied by
Delitzsch to prove that Matthew has modelled 1.1-2.15 on the canonical book
of Genesis, as the first step in his argument that the whole Gospel of
Matthew is modelled on the Pentateuch.
1.1 'book of genesis' cf. also Gen 5.1 etc.
Genealogy begins from Abraham.
Genealogical info drawn from Genesis (e.g. Gen 25.26; 29.35; 38.29f; 46.12)
1.18 'genesis of Jesus'; i.e. Virgin Birth // Creation of Adam
Important linguistic echoes (e.g. Matt 1.21 // Gen 17.19)
Conceptual Parallels: role of Angel of the Lord (Matt 1.20-24; 2. 13; cf.
Gen); importance of dreams in revealing God's plan (Matt 1.20; 2.12, 13;
cf. e.g. Gen 37.9f).
Family voyage to safety in Egypt (Matt 2.13-15 cf. Gen 45-46)
Perhaps if we were persuaded of this we might add the idea mentioned in
Davies & Allison that there might be an achrostic on Abraham, David,
Messiah in 1.2-17 [i.e. = ADAM].
