A fun day, great weather, a good team on the water. It should be repeated. -- Bob

We had a nice paddle yesterday.  Six paddlers launched from Commercial dock off Pine Island.  This was a new launch site for most of us.  It provides good access to Captive and North Captive.      As we headed out Pat Owen pointed out a house built entirely out of coral rock on near the launch site. We paddled across Pine Island Sound to the channel between Captiva ( South Seas Plantation) and North Captiva.  There as a Southeast wind creating some interesting conditions in Pine Island Sound.  There was strong adverse tidal currents in the pass creating some interesting wave patterns. However, the Gulf was calm as we turned north and traversed North Captiva.

We took a snack stop at the north end of North Captiva and headed through the channel and proceeded diagonally back toward the launch site.   The winds and current created some interesting conditions on the first leg of the return trip.

The trip mileage is uncertain because no one turned on a GPS.  My guesstimate -  18 miles.

Trip note -   The commercial dock a the end of Maria drive is open to private boaters on weekends and county holidays.   Park Launch fee 10 dollars.   We launced at a very low tide.  He launch was easy.  About one third of the way into the sound there were a few low spots to contend with.

Thanks Pat Own for putting the trip together and fellow paddlers Bob and Barbara Langbaur, Scott Leland, and Jim Palermo from Michigan for making it a nice day.

      Pat,

Barbara and I will be there and I know Scott plans on being there. We were still planning on the 15 mile paddle as planned. -- Bob

It could be a problem for some people.  I was paddling Sat AM inside North Captiva/Buck Key, saw some dead fish floating about, I don't seem to be physically affected by effects of red tide.

Here's FWC red tide map link (below), there's low to medium red tide inside the sound, high red tide in Gulf west of islands.  According to NOAA weather winds 8-15mph are coming from east and south east which could hold red tide out in Gulf.  If winds change to west everyone should stay indoors

I never counted on red tide upsetting my paddling plans, I'll be at launch Sun AM.  I'll understand if I'm the only one there.
