Subject: SVG Icon Loader
For a while now, as some of you know, I've been experimenting with the
concept on what the best way might be to use SVG icons instead of
PNGs. Today, I have released a possible solution as its own project,
so we, or anyone else could use the method I've developed.
The SVG Icon Loader is available here:
The script will extract multiple SVG images out of a single SVG file
that could be compressed as SVGZ. This provides the advantages of CSS
sprites (one GET request, many icons), and uses IMG element support
where available (Opera, Safari and Chrome). It also allows fallback
raster images for browsers that do not support this method of loading
files (IE and older versions of others).
Using SVG files in our project could offer the following benefits:
* Toolbars and icons could be made as big or small as we like (would
be neat to have Large, Medium and Small options)
* The icons could be properly re-used as smaller images as is
currently done for the layer panel.
* If we make a mobile/iPhone version, we'll likely want different-sized icons.
* It would make our project an excellent showcase to the benefits of
SVG images :)
Of course, using SVG files can potentially make the page slower, so if
we implement this script we'd want to make sure we don't significantly
reduce performance. My plan for now is to create a copy of the
svg-editor.html file that uses the script, and see how it compares.
Let me know if you'd like to contribute to the SVG Icon Loader
project, I'll be happy to add people as committers. Also if anyone is
interested in making SVG versions of our icons (don't have to be
exactly like our PNGs), please send them over. :)
Thanks, would love to hear your feedback.
