The first collection by award-winning poet Carole Mac Rury—a name familiar to readers of literary journals across the U.S. , in Canada , and abroad—was released December 15, 2008, by Black Cat Press.

In the Company of Crows: HAIKU and TANKA Between the Tides contains more than 200 individual haiku, tanka, and poem-sequences, including haiga illustrated by acclaimed sumi-e artist Ion Codrescu.

The poetry of In the Company of Crows was inspired by her home in Point Roberts, Washington , a unique coastal region straddling the U.S./Canadian border just south of 49th parallel. The beach on which she walks, plays, and meditates; the pastoral settings of her island abode; the nearby river delta; and, of course, the ocean…Icelandic ponies, coyotes, migratory birds, Orca pods which visit offshore—these are the places and creatures that inform the backdrop of Mac Rury’s work.

In addition to the haiga illustrations, artist Ion Codrescu has supplied many haunting, lovely sumi-e illustrations throughout the book; from realistic-yet-stylized animals—such as the crow that graces the cover—flowers, and scenes, to more abstract interpretations and designs. And internationally acclaimed poet and editor in his own right, Codrescu has illustrated more than 100 books; and his graphic works can be found in private and state collections in many countries. The author of ten books published in Romania , France , the U.K. , and Slovenia , he is the founder of the Constantza Haiku Society and the Constantza International Haiku Festival. Codrescu lives in Constanta , Romania .

In the Company of Crows also features a Foreword by Beverley George, president of HaikuOz: the Australian Haiku Society; and editor of the tanka journal Eucalypt. “Carole Mac Rury sees the world from a photographer’s perspective,” she writes. “The clarity of her images and the accuracy of her word choices are signatures of a mind that engages with the natural world with eyes wide open and a blend of curiosity and awe.” Indeed, Mac Rury is a prolific photographer, whose work has graced the covers of literary journals in the U.S. and overseas; and she brings that photographer’s eye to her poetry, seeing even the grandest panorama on a microcosmic scale.

The book was designed and edited by poet, journalist, and children’s book author, Cathy Drinkwater Better. Better and her husband, Doug Walker, own Black Cat Press.

In the Company of Crows: HAIKU and TANKA Between the Tides is available directly from the poet. The cover price of $18.00 includes shipping.
