I was fortunate enough to attend the Northwords Writers' Festival in
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, this past month and to meet an
amazing group of Canadian writers. I highly recommend this event and
others like it. The smaller venue provides great opportunities.
The headliners for the 2008 Northwords Festival were Bernice Morgan and
Michael Crummey from Newfoundland, Lesley Choyce from Nova Scotia, Anita
Daher and Jennifer Storm from Winnipeg, Richard Van Kamp from Vancouver,
and Annelies Pool from Yellowknife. The events covered "Brown Bag Lunch"
readings, "Open Mic" readings at the coffee house, a BBQ and
presentations at the ski club, panel discussions at the college, and a
gala evening of readings in the theatre. AND it was all free, thanks to
the great support from the businesses in the north!
