Creative Ideas & Film Grammar Workshops in Belfast

The Research Centre is delivering two workshops on behalf of the NIFTC to take place in May at the NIFTC office in Belfast.

CREATIVE IDEAS WORKSHOP is a two-day course on 2nd and 3rd May.

It been designed to help participants build their own creativity and to bring originality and productivity to their brainstorm work in groups. Delegates will learn the essential criteria for a successful factual programme and be given the tools and methodology to develop an idea to meet the needs of commissioning editors.

      COURSE CONTENT
DAY 1 will focus on using a number of brainstorming techniques to allow delegates to come up with an array of ideas to meet a given commissioning brief. It ends with a session in which delegates deconstruct and analyse a successful programme.

DAY 2 will concentrate on the basic principles of good development and how delegates can  put them into practice by selecting and developing an idea from the previous day.

The course ends with each participant giving an elevator pitch of the idea they have been working on.

FILM GRAMMAR WORKSHOP is a 1 day course on 16 May.

This course has been designed to give participants a firm grounding in the art of visual storytelling. It will enable delegates to get the best from their shoot with pieces that combine maximum visual impact with compelling interviews and a clear and coherent storyline. As well as improving the quality of the television piece it will help to save time and money in the edit by making directors more aware of the editor’s needs.

      COURSE CONTENT
Course delegates will work with a leading Editor and the Training Producer to construct a short film story.   They will start by learning how to plan for a shoot with the edit in mind. Then, using the projector and transcriptions of the interview, the group will make a sync pull choosing the soundbites which they believe will best illustrate the points needed in the story.

The editor will then cut the film from the material available. As he does so, delegates participate and contribute to the process through discussion, suggestions and questions. Some of the most common edit problems (based on survey research with a number of current industry practitioners) will become apparent.

The course ends with the group watching and discussing a  “best practice version”.
