stern= many jewish family names are derived from vernacular expressions. the german word for "star", stern is documented
as a jewish family name since the 17th century in the german cities of frankfurt am main and hamburg, and in prague (bohemia).
together with other equivalents such as astrum (latin), astruc (provencal) and etoile (french), the term has produced votive names,
meaning "born under a good star", ranging from bonus astrux and benestruc to estelle and stella, from sternlieb to
          sternau.
an indirect source os stern as a family names is represented by the traditional house signs in frankfurt and other
german cities, many of which displayed stars. a stern family living in a house called "stern" (star) is recorder in the city in the
          15th century.
in some cases stern is a toponymic surname (i.e.derived from places of origin or residence), associated with the
village of sterniany in white russia, whose name is said to have been abbreviated to sternin and eventually stern.
in jewish tradition, stars are associated with metaphors and symbolical meaning. they are used in the bible in a
figurative sense, as in joseph's dream in which his parents are represented by the sun and moon, and his eleven
brothers by eleven stars (genesis 9-10).
balaam's controversial prophecy that a star shall step out of jacob and a sceptre rise out of israel (numbers 24.17)
was said to have been fulfilled by simon of koseba in judah, who was given the messianic byname bar kochba
(the hebrew for "son of the stars" traslated into the german name sternsohn). bar kochba led the last big jewish
rising against the romans (132-135) and re-conquered jerusalem before being defeated by hadrian's general severus.
the hexagonal star, known as maguen david (shield od david), found on a hebrew seal from the seventh century
b.c.e., discovered in sidon, has become the universally recognised symbol of judaism all over the world, of zionism
          and the state of israel.

My STERNs are from Zloczow, Galitzia. They are Levi's. Related
family names are HASS/HAAS, KALB/KOHL, SCHWARTZ and PARNES. I think
that it is the STERNs of these families who are related to the
mother of the actor Joseph Schildkraut.

Does any one have detailed family trees?
