*******At Eastertide, we begin with the series of mantras we call the
Calendar of the Soul. If anyone has been thinking about taking them up as
meditative mantras, this is a good time to start.

      The "Calendar of the Soul"

Dr. Rudolf Steiner gave out the 'Soul-Calendar' in 1912, consisting of 52
meditative mantras to enable us to experience the 'astral' (soul) events
occurring within us as well as in Nature during the year, starting with the
first mantra every year on Easter Sunday.

These mantras for each week are well known to many students of Steiner,
but the original "Calendar " also had 12 Images of the Zodiac, to be
meditated with each month (to sense the working of the 'solar' forces in the
cosmos), plus a listing of the Moon's phases & position in the signs each
night (for sensing the 'lunar' forces), and a list of dates of births and
deaths of spiritual figures and dates of events to contemplate on specific

Here's the Soul-Calendar restored to its complete form.

The Sun, according to the Doctor, is under the influence of the
constellation PISCES from March 9th through April 13th in our era.
A version of the new symbolic image of the FISHES from the original
Soul-Calendar, done by an artist from Steiner's sketches & indications, is
      attached to this e-mail.

      This week's mantra.
For those not familiar with the use of mantras: The anthroposophic path
uses symbolic images like the Zodiac image ("Imaginations") to awaken
spiritual sight, and mantras ("Inspirations") to begin spiritual hearing.
The meaning of the words of a mantra at first sight is not important, but
rather reciting it and entering with deeper soul-forces into its inner

Also, these mantras were created in the German language and have their
rhythms in that, so learning an English version is just a step to using the
original; I've kept close to it in translating, so anyone can easily go from
      English to German.

      * M A N T R A #1 (EASTER) *
      Wenn aus den Weltenweiten
      Die Sonne spricht zum Menschensinn
      Und Freude aus den Seelenteifen,
Dem Licht sich eint im Schauen,
Dann ziehen aus der Selbstheit Hlle
      Gedanken in die Raumesfernen
      Und binden dumpf
Des Menschen Wesen und des Geistes Sein.

When out of the Wide World
The Sun speaks to Mans Senses
And Joy out of Souls Depths
Becomes one with Light in vision,
Then is drawn from the Egos Sheath
      Thinking into farthest Worlds
      And joins, dimly,
Mans Essence and the Spirits Being.

This time of year we receive the Life Force from the returning Sun at
Easter. The Spirit forms its annual connection with the Cosmos once
again---after having withdrawn into the Earth in winter---and the etheric
body is renewed through this connection to the World Spirit.

The Moon positions and phases for the week are listed below along with
some of the spiritual figures and events connected with the days.

Sunday, April 8th. Moon Capricorn. Wilhelm von Humboldt died 1835.

Monday, April 9th. Moon Capricorn. Mary Cleophas (who with Mary of Magdala
and the Mother of Jesus in Johns Gospel was present at the Crucifixion).
Theophilus (Bishop of Alexandria in the 5th century). Francis Bacon of
      Verulam died 1626.

Tuesday, April 10th. Moon Capricorn. Last Quarter. The Prophets Daniel and

Wednesday, April 11th. Moon Aquarius. Leo (Pope that turned back the wave of
      Attila from Italy).

Thursday, April 12th. Moon Aquarius. Zeno.

Friday, April 13th. Moon Pisces. Justin Martyr (famous Christian writer of
      the time of Marcus Aurelius).

Saturday, April 14th. Moon Pisces. Benedict Huygens, the great Physicist,
      born 1629.

Venus is a brilliant Evening Star in the West above the setting sun each
evening. The bright reddish star above and to the left of it is Aldebaran,
the Eye of the Bull of Taurus.

Saturn is high in the sky in the stars of Leo in the southwest at sunset,
directly south (on the meridian) about 8 PM.
