The Gnostic equivalent of Satan would be Yaldabaoth, the fantastic
lion-faced serpent devoid of Spirit. Yaldabaoth is described as "an
abortion," born premature to Sophia. We can understand why he is
described in these terms by reading the ancient Gnostic texts that
make up the Nag Hammadi Library. Without spirit, Yaldabaoth lives in
a world of spiritual darkness in which there is no God. The inner
universe is the world of the spirit, the kingdom of heaven, whereas
the outer universe is the kingdom belonging to the evil Archon. It is
from this outer darkness that Yaldabaoth created legions of demonic
archangels, the outer earth and the outer man. Like he himself, his
creations are inwardly deformed, animal-like, totally earth bound,
having the cold, machine-driven mentality of a humanoid. The humanoid
is a life form impervious to growth and decay. Its deathlessness
represents a form of immortality, but an immortality gained through a
clever manipulation of genetic programming and not any genuine inner
change that leads to an increased perception of reality. The humanoid
is the symbol of the ideal Ahriminic human being whose consciousness
has been completely mechanized, and is dead to the Cosmic Order.
