Re: [steiner] Question on the three lectures comments on the Gospel of St. John 2nd lecture
Dear Chantel,Steiner is talking about the elemental beings working on the bodies during sleep."When however, a person begins to work on his spiritual development, he must also create the necessary conditions for the astral body to work upon the physical. Meditation influences the work of the astral body upon the physical and etheric bodies during the night. Only beneficent beings must be allowed access to th ehuman being. He who seeks initiation must achieve the utmost calm. This includes the avoidance of all stimulants, especially alcohol. Other requirements or any higher striving are control of thought, a morally blameless life, the effort not to be swayed to and fro by every feeling, be it pain or joy, but to maintain balance of soul. This makes it possible for good beings to be active when the astral body works on the physical and etheric bodies during sleep."Okay, alcohol, another name for it is 'spirits'. I can see a blanket being put on the whole process if alcohol is consumed but how exactly does it effect the process. If somebody has a good explanation I would LOVE to hear it. I have also found out that chocolate, carbonated drinks, red meat and dairy have negative effects. But alcohol standing alone as far worse than those mentioned.========================snip======================
It seems to me Steiner made many references about the effects of alcohol upon the human being, but at the moment one in particular comes to my mind, and that is his lectures entitled "The Effects of Occult Development upon the Etheric Body and the Sheaths of Man", although it may by now have a somewhat different title. In this work, Steiner speaks of the impossibility of attaining spiritual insight due to the role alcohol plays in the human body of taking the place of the human Ego in man's blood. This is essentially the reason from a somewhat broad aspect.
