      The "Calendar of the Soul"
        The cycle of the year can be a meditation, and Dr. Steiner gave out the 'Calendar of the Soul' for this, 52 meditative mantras enabling us to experience the 'astral' (soul) events occurring within us and in outer Nature during the year. These verses are well known to many anthroposophists---- but the original Calendar published in 1912 also had 12 Images of the Zodiac, to be meditated with each month to sense the working of the 'solar' forces in the cosmos in the daytime, a listing of the Moon's phases and position in the constellations each night (for sensing the 'lunar' forces), and a list of saints and other spiritual figures connected with specific days of the week.
          Here is the whole 'Soul-Calendar' as it was meant to be used.
          First, the mantra in the original German and in translation:

      *  M A N T R A  # 5 2  *
      Wenn aus den Seelentiefen
      Der Geist sich wendet zu dem Weltensein
      Und Schönheit quillt aus Raumesweiten,
      Dann zieht aus Himmelsfernen
      Des Lebens Kraft in Menschenleiber
      Und einet, machtvoll wirkend,
      Des Geistes Wesen mit dem Menschensein.

      When out of the Soul's Deeps
      The Spirit winds its way to World-Being
      And Beauty swells into the widths of Space,
      Then is drawn from farthest Heavens
      The Life Force into Man's bodies
      And there becomes one, mightily working,
      The Spirit's Essence and Man's being.

      This week's mantra:
      Last week, we felt, through the use of the mantra, how the richness of all the sprouting new growth of Nature poured into us, so that Nature itself was being transformed into something new through us. This week's mantra begins the Easter mood of 'resurrection' of our life forces, as in our depths, our Spirit forms its yearly connection with the cosmos once again---after having withdrawn into the Earth in winter---and the etheric body is renewed through this connection to the World Spirit.

          ( The anthroposophic path uses symbolic images or 'Imaginations' to awaken spiritual 'sight' and mantras or 'Inspirations' to begin spiritual 'hearing'. The meaning of the words of a mantra at first sight is not all-important, but rather the reciting of it and entering with deeper soul-forces into its experience. These mantras were created in the German language and have their rhythms in that, so learning an English version is just a step to using the original; I've kept close to it in translating, so you can easily go from the meaning to the actual mantra. }

      The verse for the Southern Hemisphere for this week:
      *  M A N T R A  # 2 2  *
      Das Lichte aus Weltenweiten,
      Im Innern lebt es kräftig fort:
      Es wird zum Seelenlichte
      Und leuchtet in die Geistestiefen,
      Um Früchte zu entbinden,
      Die Menschenselbst aus Weltenselbst
      Im Zeitenlaufe reifen lassen.

      The Light out of World-Widenesses
      In my Inner lives as a continuing power;
      It turns into Soul-Light
      And shines in Spirit-deeps,
      The Fruit to unbind,
      That Man's Self out of World's Self
      In Time's course will allow to ripen.

          *******Glad to hear you're actually working with them. It's a question that must come up whenever someone does, because the verses are keyed to Easter.

              Dr. Steiner referred often to the fact that the date of Easter is not 'regular' like the dead mineral-physical world, but is created by the interaction of the rhythms of the Sun and Moon, in other words is an astral and etheric phenomenon. As such, it can sometimes be about a full month after the vernal equinox (as it is this year), and other times only a day or two after it-- -- -- so that sometimes not a full 52 weeks elapse between one Easter and the next, while in other years it can be up to 56 weeks. This year, the week of the 52nd verse ends on March 29th, while we don't take up the Easter verse until April 20th.

              I've heard that some people have adopted an 'Ahrimanic' method of dealing with this, namely by dividing the time from one Easter to another by 52-- -- -- but then we would not be dealing with an actual 'week' (which is a cosmic time period, old name the 'woch'), nor be taking up a new verse on the Sun's day.

              In observing Time through the years, I've found that for instance there is a truth to traditional common people's observations such as the old proverb from the middle ages that when there is a late Easter, there is a late spring (it certainly is late in coming here in Virginia Beach!). The years are different from each other, when you don't homogenize them like by using the above-mentioned method. We are now entering a period of three weeks in which the previous year has ended, while the new year has not yet begun. During this time I have continued to use the 52nd verse in past years. There is also a correspondence between the 52nd verse and the first one we will take up at Easter (April 20th), so I was thinking about presenting both of those here as reflective of the mood of this time of this special solar-lunar 'year'. This is the time when we receive a renewed etheric body for the coming year, by the soul connecting with the cosmos. It is a very special time, and was always treated so by Christians.
