      Cass -

      Sorry that I have not gotten back to you sooner with additional information but I just got the rest of information I needed last night.

      We cannot use our meeting place on November 30 as they have a dinner going on that night, but we can have the use of the facility on Saturday, December 2 starting at 2 and the same from Sunday, December 3. Would either of these two dates work for you?

      A fighting demonstration should not be a problem.

      Let me know what other information I can get for you,
      Ellen

      We discussed the demo/knighting ceremony at our meeting on Sunday night, and we have a few questions.

      What time is the meeting? Since we are in Charleston, and many of us have day jobs, we would have difficulty getting to Newton before 7pm-ish.

      Also how many scouts would we be doing the demo for? In the past we have done demos with different "stations" of interest...usually 3 or 4...and then rotate groups of kids from one station to the other to keep them frpm getting too bored with a lecture-type discussion...especially with boys of this age group. Typical stations might be heraldry, armor/weapons display, calligraphy/scrolls, ironworking...it just depends on which of our members will be able to make it. This would take a little set-up time on our part to put stuff out on tables and so forth, but there may be one or two of our group that could get there a little earlier than 7pm to do that.

      Also, would the Masonic Lodge allow a fighting demo? Our group fights with rattan weapons in heavy armor, in a style similar to how knights would have trained for combat in the Middle Ages. Not sure if we would have the people or the time to do that in this setting, but wanted to ask and make sure that would be okay with the Masons before we made our plans.

      We hope to be able to help you out with this. With the additional information, we should be able to let you know by the end of this week, if that's okay.

      Cass,

      Thank you for your reply I was just hoping I had the correct contact information for someone in your group.

      <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

      What we would like to have your group help with is twofold.

      <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

      First would be a short presentation (no more than 20-30 minutes) on the middle ages your group can do anything you think a group of 7-10 year old boys would enjoy and are allowed to demonstrate.

      <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

      Secondly, we would like help with is our advancement ceremony. We are currently in the process of selling popcorn as our fall fundraiser and the council is doing a special incentive program for the Scouts. The program is if they sell $300 in product they will be deemed a popcorn knight and will receive a special patch as well as their name in a drawing for an Xbox 360. As a leader, I thought it would just be an awesome experience for the Scouts if they could be knighted by someone who would know how to do it and would have the gear to do so. Our meetings are normally an hour in length. If this is something you could help with we are going to try to be able to use the lodge room at our Masonic lodge since the have nice velvet throne looking type chairs. I just would really like this to be something the Scouts will remember for a lifetime and the knighting ceremony for the popcorn just happened to fall right in with our monthly theme of Cubs in Shining Armor.

      <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

      If you need more information let me know. I can be reached at 217-683-2216 in the evenings.

      <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

      Thank you,

      Ellen Watkins

      Cubmaster

      Sorry, I have not been ignoring your request. I was waiting to see what members of our group might be available at the time because I am afraid there might be a conflict with a local theatre production that several of us are involved in.

      Could you give me more details of what sort of a medieval presentation you are looking for?

      Again, sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

          Cass - that is too bad. We are trying to stay away from the rest of December as well to give our families a break with all the holiday stuff that goes on. I am going to propose one last date in November to consider - the 27 at 7 pm. If we can only get a couple people that night to help with our awards ceremony we could do the demonstrations at our March or April pack meetings.

          Let me know,
          Ellen

          Unfortunately, the weekend of Dec 2nd is bad for all of us. Many of us also participate in the Charleston Alley Theatre, and our Christmas production opens on Fri Dec 1st and runs through Mon Dec 4th, so we would not be able to help you out that weekend. The next weekend is also busy for many of our members, and after that our college members have finals and Christmas break.

          If it was possible that you could wait until January, we would be more able to participate. I do apologize for not being to help you at this time as we had hoped to be able to do.

          You might try contacting the SCA group in Terre Haute and see if their schedules would coincide better with your plans. This is the contact information I have for them:

          Strikkenwoode (Shire)
          Rowena Lindsey (Linda Lindsey)
          3492 E Marquette Ave
          Terre Haute, IN 47805-1043
          812-466-7003 Whinafred@...
          http://www.geocities.com/strikkenwoode/

          Again, please accept my apologies for not being able to help you at this time. We enjoy doing demos for local groups, and two of our members have also been active in Boy Scouts and were looking forward to linking the two.

          Sincerely,

          Cass Strong

          Subject: Re: Request from Cub Scout Pack 67

          Sorry, I have not been ignoring your request. I was waiting to see what members of our group might be available at the time because I am afraid there might be a conflict with a local theatre production that several of us are involved in.

          Could you give me more details of what sort of a medieval presentation you are looking for?

          Again, sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

          Ms. Strong,

          My name is Ellen Watkins and I am the Cubmaster for Pack 67 in Newton, IL (Jasper County). Our monthly theme for November is "Cubs in Shining Armor." We would like to know if your group would be willing to come and help us with our November Pack meeting (Nov 30). We are looking for a group to do a medival presentation and help performing a knighting ceremony for the boys. Please let me know if your group would be interested in helping us.

          Yours in Scouting,

          Ellen Watkins, Cubmaster
