The film music of Dustin O'Halloran is occasionally mistaken for
impressionistic piano works by Erik Satie, while the tracks on his album
LUMIERE (43'21") will surely be compared to the ambient chamber music of
Tim Story or the minimalistic classicism of Max Richter. O'Halloran's
pieces for piano and string ensemble do indeed posses the simplicity,
innovative harmonies, freedom of form and musical understatement as those
by his older contemporaries. The nine sophisticated, truth-seeking songs
on LUMIERE range from sanguine to supernal. At the center of each is
O'Halloran's piano, which tells every heartfelt story in melody and tone.
The surrounding string section and frequent ethereal effects add
interesting textures and layers, but just as easily the piano may go
unaccompanied - creating an open and even more intimate space between
listener and performer. This is not Ambient Music for the periphery, these
compositions beg to be listened to. It has been said that, "music is the
shorthand of emotion", and this sensual journey arrives at a place of rare
      beauty.

Somewhere between New Age, Ambient, Contemporary Instrumental and
Spacemusic lies TEN YEARS OF DUST (58'01") by Peter G. Brown. While its
inviting melodies, evocative atmosphere and perfect concords provide an
illuminating encounter, shade occasionally touches the bright tones of
this work - and the mood may turn dark and uncertain at any time. Each of
the 14 superb tracks conjure up its very own distinctive mood and feeling,
yet the overall sense of this music remains unified. Reverberant piano
plays across an undulating plane of breathing synthesizer chords as
resonant notes ascend along lovely keyboard scales. Unique sounds rise,
converge and separate along a gradual linear course. Ethereal voices on
one track, rumbling and churning drones on another, there is even an
acoustic guitar - this smart album is as lovely as it is interesting.
Brown's talent for pacing, contrasting calm against cloudy and arranging
pleasant harmonies out of just the right kinds of sounds is what makes TEN
YEARS OF DUST a cut above the rest.

Saul Stokes makes Electronic Music that sounds like it is coming straight
out of the wall outlet. Over the years he has become known for his
concerts of sonic improvisation and albums of complex atmospheric energy.
His work has always been, and continues to be, based on crafting original
sonic elements and forms into beautiful realizations of texture and
consonance. More recently Stokes has been embracing his internal
contrasts. On SLEEK NUCLEUS (54'42") he produces music that registers in
both the body and in the mind. SLEEK NUCLEUS is front-loaded with catchy,
engaging tracks - but although this CD's songs may be easier to grasp,
this accessibility in no way represents a scaling back of ambition. While
overlapping rhythms push SLEEK NUCLEUS to the dance floor, for all its
heat and beats the most interesting elements transpire quietly. His
one-of-a-kind aural ideals bring a unique aesthetic to the field. This
album is full of infectious rhythms, kinetic throbbing and subliminal
pulse, but the thoughtful listener will also find grainy tones, chirping
modulations and fascinating timbres amidst Stokes' melodic sound designs.
Never succumbing to formula, Stokes uses ideas and imagination as maps. He
is the musician who speaks most directly to our contemporary condition,
but has always been too far out there and unclassifiable to gain the
following he deserves. Not one of his works are less than perfect.

Upon listening to the first track on RADIANT SKY (59'38") one might
imagine that this was something inadvertently left off of a Patrick
O'Hearn album. But as the CD plays on we hear the author Scott August move
from the opening piece's spacious drones, breathing guitar and dramatic
combining of grand piano with grave percussive rumbling to a more
expansive musical palette. It turns out that this music's decisive element
is the Native American flute - and is prominently featured on just about
every track. There is also present a fair amount of lush synthesizer
tones, exotic percussion and steely acoustic guitar, but it is August's
flute playing that leads the listener to RADIANT SKY's beautiful reality.
From reverberant ceremonial soloing, to fuller, radiantly colored
instrumentals, these ten compositions have the ability to, in some places
evoke stillness, while in others offer heart-pumping inspiration. But
August mostly keeps this a quiet work written in simple strokes - and the
world of Contemporary Instrumental music is all the better for it.
