BIG IN JAPAN is the double CD plus DVD release by Klaus Schulze - drawn
from his performances in Tokyo on the 20th and 21st of March 2010. This
multi-disc set provides all the "playing in the moment" excitement
listeners love in their live albums, yet also delivers the powerful and
lasting listening experience one would expect from a musical legend. While
areas of this recording date back to the 1970s and the very dawn of
Spacemusic (where Schulze was a signal spirit), the works on BIG IN JAPAN
feel very fresh. Fans of his classic sequencer pieces will welcome
Schulze's re-imagining of his epic "Crystal Lake" - as well as the
dramatic atmosphere, sustaining choir fantasies and synthetic textures
that build throughout. The more kinetic sections offer pulsing arpeggio
patterns entwined with driving drum beats, all winding out beneath
reckless synth lead lines. Bringing nearly 50 years of experience with him
to Tokyo for these performances, Schulze possesses a rare insight into
this style of electronic music - and (certainly at this stage in his long
career) understands the sense of summation art can bring.

Conventional music is known for using songs with words to convey fleeting
moods while works realized in the genres of Ambient and Spacemusic have
(at their best) the ability to evoke much more. From lasting states of
mind on down to obscure mental abstractions, the open ended compositions
heard on STAR'S END provide the listener with an opportunity to encounter
not only compositions by the world's visionary musicians but also the
fascinating mental territory that this music summons. With a name like
Glacial Movements one could imagine that releases from this label might
conjure up visions of tundral landscapes or boreal lands. OVER THE SUMMIT
(57'20") by Netherworld certainly does this, and more. This album
transfers its frigid message in six subdued ambient works. Using nothing
more than variations in timbre Netherworld (a.k.a. Alessandro Tedeschi)
produces a sonic experience aligned with a frozen nocturnal realm. The
character of the sounds used in each of the pieces range from the rounded
and consonant to the brittle and dissonant - for a perfect icy mix of
harmonious designs and anomalous forms. In a few spots Tedeschi mixes in a
voice, faded low and beneath reverb but adding to the ever-growing mystery
of this CD. The result is a genuinely unique sustaining and uncannily cold
atmosphere. Electronic Music is less about attaining or demonstrating a
level of virtuosity, but more an examination of the inner self. One of its
most significant attributes is the ability to transfer to the listener the
inner condition of the composer, or a condition completely imagined by the
composer. It may be that OVER THE SUMMIT is about frostbound landscapes
and the bitter expanse, but it could just as easily be that this release
is actually an allegorical tale of separateness and the ever increasing
human isolation of the 21st century. Unlike most other forms of music, its
meaning will vary - and mainly depends upon what the listener is bringing
        with them to the experience.

With the release of DARK MOON (48'09") synthesist Dave Luxton has really
hit his stride. This vivid Spacemusic study creates a fascinating sonic
realm suspended between the Earth, her moon and the cosmos. Each of the
subtly brilliant, spacey to the core tracks touch the listener in a
heartfelt way. An electronic slow dance of whooshing synthesizers and
ethereal choirs, Luxton's sonic collage of nine pieces finds continuity in
its lunar theme. Most often we find the music advancing outward in
cascading chords and rumbling drones - with Luxton's talent for pacing and
sound design on full display. Yet DARK MOON can also morph suddenly into
moments of emotional power. As mysterious voices are mixed amidst churning
soundscapes, tones collide like charged particles in a slow reveal of this
artist's reverence of all things celestial. In the same league as albums
by Spacemusic legends Michael Stearns and Jonn Serrie, DARK MOON is bound
to feel familiar - which will allow us to savor its individual details all
          the more.

STAR'S END is more than an escape from the everyday. Its mission is to
provide listeners with an enriching experience - one that will tap into
new and different parts of the imagination. Every week for well over 30
years STAR'S END has been creating a unique sonic atmosphere carried over
the radiowaves of WXPN in Philadelphia. The experience is different for
each person, with each establishing their own unique narrative, yet all
are connected by the continuous flow of music and mood. The hours of these
broadcasts belong to you and may be the only time during the week where
nothing more is asked of you than to listen... sleep... dream...

STAR'S END does want you out there listening every week, but not as part
of a passive experience. During the 02.27.11 broadcast you will be asked
to do more than just tune in and listen; you will be asked to call in and
pledge! Your generous act will fund public radio station WXPN and
indicates that you are among a select few who are serious about this
unique radio show and the amazing range of music it presents.

Public radio relies on its listeners for its faith in the future. WXPN
Membership begins at just $60. Please call in with a pledge at this level
(or an amount that best reflects your feelings towards STAR'S END) so that
we may meet the Winter fundraising goals. The donations that come in
during the fund drive are so important. STAR'S END needs to hear from you
this weekend! Thank you for tuning in, and then phoning in to the STAR'S
END Fundraising broadcast of 02.27.11. There will be special Thank You CDs
available for those calling in, including the STAR'S END 30th Anniversary
            Anthology 2CD set.

Through your contributions you are doing your part as a Public Radio
listener - it's an investment that will help keep STAR'S END in your
listening space every week. Thanks very much for your support!
