  • Hi MSM, My G-G-G-Grandfather was Benjamin Maggott (later Magnett) Not sure where he was born but would like to think it was Madagascar. He married Margaret James and lived on St. Helena as a "slave" of the East India Co. He had two sons, Benjamin and Charles, born ~1820~. Benjamin (or his son) went to New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Charles went to Hawaii. Let me know if any of...

  • Linda, during the 1800's, Hawaii was the whaling capitol of the Pacific, Lahaina, Maui to be specific. I would guess that whaling ships made stops at St. Helena from time to time, and probably took on crew members there. One of my ancestors came here to Hawaii on a whaling ship, and another went to New Bedford, MA, also likely on a whaling ship. If any of your ancestors worked for...

  • Hi Terri. My g-g-grandfather also came from the Island of St. Helena. He was a sailor on a whaling ship and settled here in Honolulu under the name of Magnett, but his original name was apparently Maggott or Magott. Others may have changed Maggott to Macket or even Margate. Verification of names was pretty sketchy in those days. He became a Subject of the Crown of Owyhee in the...

  • I don't know if this will help, but my G-G-G-Grandfather was Benjamin Maggott (later Magnett) born before 1800 and still living on the island in 1850. There were sons, Benjamin Jr. and Charles (posibly more). My ancestor, Charles came here to Hawaii and Benjamin Jr. settled in New Bedford, Mass. Another branch of the Maggotts settled in South Africa. Apparently the name morphed...
