My great great grandfather, Thomas J. Clark, was born on St. Helena Island in 1813. I Think his parents name were John & Jane Clark from Sussex, England. I don't know how they ended up on the Island or what they did there. Their first child Jane was born on St. Helena in June 1810.  Their third  child George was born in Sussex, England so they must have returned to England before immigrating to America.   I have tried to research the Clarks on St. Helena Island but have so far not been able to get any information.  Does anyone know of a website or document that may list the births or lists the families living on St. Helena Island in 1813.

I have searched the East India Register & Directory but have been unable to find any information.

      Thankyou

Colin, I have been reading your responses to enquiries on people from St Helena Island.  I wonder if you might be able to help me   I have made several enquiries online but have received no replys.  My Great Great Grandfather Thomas J. Clark was born on St Helena Island on Jan 13, 1813.  I think his fathers name was John Clark, from Sussex, England.  I have no other information on them such as how or why they were on St Helena Island or when they got there & left.  My GG Grandmother & Grandfather were buried in Nebraska, USA in 1895.

I made contact with someone on St Helena and they told me that the St Helena Genealogy information could be obtained from a sociaty in Oxford, England, but I don't know how to get in touch with them.

I thank you for any information you might provide.

Don, I am not a genealogist and although I pick up odd bits of information I don’t keep a database of families or individuals. I have searched through my computer archive but nothing has come up. It is likely he came to the island as a soldier and there are muster lists in the British Library for each quarter under the shelfmarks below. The list provide information on the soldiers date of arrival on the island but this info can be unreliable and rather than just pick one at random it is better to track back to the first entry and see I there are any variations.

Other than that it is difficult and time consuming. The Consultations particularly the earlier ones – say pre 1805 do list the names of ships’ crews and passengers but without more information you would have to wade through 1000s of pages and not be certain of finding anything.

I know of no Oxford based geneaological society in Oxford (and I live about 15 miles away) that has info on St Helena families. The Rhodes House library – part of the Bodleian University Library has a collection of St Helena material but nothing on genealogy.

            Hope this is some help
