Many of you will be familiar with the history of the Solomon family on
St. Helena, especially Saul Solomon and his brothers but it still
seems a mystery where the family came from originally. Saul Solomon's
brother Lewis Gideon (who later took his second Christian name as his
surname) is a direct ancestor and at the time of the 1861 UK Census
Lewis Gideon lived in London and his place of birth is listed with
Canterbury, Kent. However, a contact who is currently transcribing the
Jewish Canterbury records confirmed there is no listing of a Saul,
Lewis, Joseph, Charles or Benjamin Solomon. Could it be that the
addition of "Kent" is an assumption of the census enumerator and that
the Solomons came from Canterbury, New Zealand? But the records there
don't seem to go back pre 1800. Can anybody help?
      Thanks and regards,
      Sigi
