- Aug 6, 2015Does anyone here have access to the Dutch translation of Spinoza’s Ethics published in 1677 as part of his
Nagelate Schriften?
In Curley’s translation he translates ID6 as follows:
> D6: By God I understand a being absolutely infinite, i.e., a substance consisting of an infinity of attributes, of which each one expresses an 3 eternal and infinite essence.
In his footnote Curley writes, “The NS have the indefinite article here.” In in his translation of the second part of the proof of IP19 Curley again uses the indefinite article:
> Next, by God's attributes are to be understood what (by D4) expresses an essence of the Divine substance, i.e., what pertains to substance.
But in this case Curley does not add a footnote, so one is left to wonder whether the 1677 Dutch version has the indefinite article here as well.
