FOURTEEN years ago, when Morjorie Newlin was 72, her neighbourhood supermarket had 50-pound bags of kitty litter on sale.

Without anyone to help her carry the bags back to her house, she struggled mightily under the load. Never a particularly athletic woman, but staunchly independent, she decided that she had to do something about her deteriorating physical capabilities.

      She started lifting weights.

"I want to be as independent as I can be, for as long as I can," said Newlin, whose parents were born in Barbados.

This great-grandmother, and retired nurse, who turned 86 in August, said: "I just want to do things for myself."

After 13 years of weight training, Newlin is more than taking care of herself. At her two-storey home in Mt Airy, Philadelphia, Newlin, who runs up the stairs with the sprightliness of a ten-year-old, has a room dedicated entirely to plaques, certificates and trophies from body-building competitions that have taken her as far away as Italy, France and Germany.

      Late-blooming career

"The new law would outlaw any material that featured violence that was, or appeared to be, life-threatening or likely to result in serious and disabling injury.

Although it is already illegal to distribute or publish such images under the Obscene Publications Act, the material has become increasingly available via the Internet.

"The vast majority of people find these forms of violent and extreme pornography deeply abhorrent," Coaker said.

"Such material has no place in our society but the advent of the Internet has meant that this material is more easily available and means existing controls are being by-passed -- we must move to tackle this.""
