March 18/19 ('round midnight!), East Atlanta, GA:

Nicole Atkins performed a FABULOUS show. Most of her material was from her latest Columbia release 'Neptune City'. She describes her style as "pop-noir", that darkly romantic style of music of Cold War/film noir America originally the domain of Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, and Frank Sinatra. This style would heavily influence the next generation of artists like The Beatles, The Moody Blues, The Doors, Electric Light Orchestra, Todd Rundgren, k.d. lang, and Echo and the Bunnymen; also filmmakers such as David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, and John Waters.

Atkins and her band The Sea were the last of 4 promising bands. They were by far the tightest and road ready. They're in the middle of an extensive tour of North America and Europe, but they are still rockin' hard with driving enthusiasm. David, the guitarist, and Daniel on keyboards and backing vocals, are particularly adept at reproducing the dense, evocative textures of the studio album. Nicole's rich, tremulous alto soars above the band with feeling and precision. She encores with a Jim Morrison/Doors tribute, "The Crystal Ship", a most appropriate choice.
