Ensemble Chaconne performs The Glorious Ones – Music by the Great Late Baroque Masters as part of First Night Quincy, on December 31 at 7:30 p.m. and again at 8:30 p.m., at the Quincy Historical Society, Adams Academy, 8 Adams Street, Quincy, Massachusetts.  For information, call 617-376-1071.

The period-instrument trio (Peter Bloom-flute, Carol Lewis-viola da gamba, and Olav Chris Henriksen, lute) showcases late Baroque masterpieces, including J.S. Bach’s Sonata in e minor, BWV 1034; Vivaldi’s famous D Major lute concerto; and works of Handel and Fran├žois Couperin.

Now celebrating its 16th season, Ensemble Chaconne is known for its dramatic concerts of Renaissance and Baroque music, performing familiar masterpieces and lesser-known gems in distinctive and compelling settings.  The group has appeared at venues such as Jordan Hall, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Plimouth Plantation, Brandeis University, and Museum of Our National Heritage.  The members of Ensemble Chaconne have concertized widely with other historical ensembles such as Boston Camerata, Handel and Haydn, and the Aston Magna Festival Orchestra, and they appear on numerous critically acclaimed CDs.  Ensemble Chaconne is a member of the Massachusetts Cultural Council Performing and Touring Roster and the New England States Touring Roster.

The Boston Globe called Bloom’s playing “a revelation for unforced sweetness and strength,” and praised “Lewis’s fiery, incisive gamba playing,” while hailing “unabashed virtuoso Henriksen” for his stunning performance on lute.

Ensemble Chaconne’s current concert themes include the music of Shakespeare’s plays, gems from the court of Louis XIV, works by women composers of 17th and 18th century Europe, music from the court of Frederick the Great, and beloved repertoire from the late Baroque masters.
