I think you will find the new replacements from Gates are made with Carbon
and will take more power. They have guides for tensioning and it should be
pretty straight forward. I have a '92 with the Gates belt.

      Greetings all:

My 1992 Solectria Force uses a Gates Poly Chain Belt #8MGT-720-12 to connect
      the motor to the differential.
This model was made before they had the nice case aluminum gear drive
      differential.
A few years ago I bought two of them and put them under the front seat of
the car along with a couple wrenches.

Recently, after about 30K+ miles the old belt broke. I installed a new belt
on the side of the freeway in about 15 minutes and was on my way again. The
new belt just broke after less than 1,000 miles and I installed the last
      one.

In both cases the belts broke cleanly in half and did not show significant
wear or abrasion near the point of breakage.
The recently installed belt has about 3/4" of play and is not overly tight.
I am getting a bit nervous about getting stranded in my EV when I need to be
      somewhere on time.

Any thoughts on why the new Gates belt broke so soon?

      Thank you,
      Gary Carlson
