I had a bit of fun with one a few months ago on one of the other mailing
lists, where someone claimed they had been robbed at gunpoint in Glasgow
and were now stuck with a massive hospital bill and no credit cards and
needed $2000 to pay for it all.

So I posted a reply, along the lines of:
Well, you shouldn't have a "hospital bill" because the UK is a First
World country and therefore has socialised healthcare. What kind of
backwoods hole do you think this is? Furthermore, I live just outside
Glasgow, so let me know which hotel you're at and I'll swing by and sort
something out. Oh, and who's asking for dollars? We use pounds
sterling, or at a pinch euros.

"Oh, it's not in Glasgow it's outside Glasgow in a place called
Bishopbriggs, it's a long way from Glasgow"

Really? I drive through there to *get* to Glasgow, it's a suburb...

They did actually end up giving me some contact details in a hotel in a
shitey part of Glasgow, which I passed onto the police. I don't know if
they were able to do much.

            Dear Greg,
I have great news.  I just heard from Mgosu Nboni in Ethiopia.  He's the son of a deceased chieftain, and he's got to move his money to an American bank pronto.  He just needs an American bank account number.  He says that if he can transfer his money through my account, I can keep 10% of his $20 million!  I was going to send him my account info, but since you've run into hard times, I'll put him in touch with you and you can get an instant transfer!

No one from the state of Washington in the US (far northwest corner of the country) would say- "I came down here to Madrid, Spain."
They just wouldn't say that but some one located elsewhere (that didn't know geography) would.

Norman, the message is a scam by someone who has highjacked the email account/signature of the party which appears to have authored the message. If you look back group members have responded in all sorts of ways with no continuation of commentary from the alleged original poster. If the fellow was actually in trouble I believe we would have gotten some sort of confirmation from him by now.

thanks for the comment about "...down here..." I was puzzled on that but being in south Europe an Italian would never use "down here", maybe an English or north European persom may say so.

We may use it Italian when one from north Italy comes down south.

                            Dear Greg,
I have great news.

[Let 'em talk to each other.  <snicker>]
                            Kevin

                            hello,

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, I came down here to Madrid Spain for a short vacation unfortunately we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed. All  cash, credit card cell were stolen off me but luckily for us we  still have our lives  and passport safe.

I've been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all, Our flight leaves in less than few hours from  now but we are  having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel  manager won't let  me leave until i settle the bills

I'm freaked out and i need your urgent help with (2,000euro)
