I know your misgivings. The SoftRock was my first experience with SMT as well. If you are an ARRL member, along with other suggestions given here, I also recommend downloading the pdf’s of “You Can Work With SMT” from the archives… It gives a couple of really good techniques that allayed my fears. Now, I think it’s easier than through-hole. A lighted magnifier is also a big help, if your eyes are as tired as mine. As others have said, watch out for the springiness of the strip. They can fly fast and far. And, if one more hits the floor of my shack, I’m ripping out the carpet and tiling the floor.
