Re: [softrock40] el cheapo super low end barely usable oscilloscope?
The 54x scopes accommodated a wide range of plug-ins, including the
type N 600 MHz sampling plug-in, the 1S1 1 GHz sampling
plug-in, and several spectrum-analyzer plug-ins. The sampling units
have a 50-ohm input impedance and are limited to a
few volts maximum inputs, but they're definitely capable of seeing RF
beyond the scope's nominal bandwidth.
The spectrum-analyzer plug-ins are somewhat nonintuitive to use but
can deliver usable results. Repairing any of these high-end
plug-ins will be difficult for a nonspecialist, so get one that works reliably.
The best of the 54x family, in my opinion, is the 547, which has the
sharpest-focusing CRT of any o'scope on the market.
You can (figuratively speaking) shave with the trace<g>.
Finally, while photographing a scope's CRT formerly required a
special camera that used Polaroid(tm) film, you can do the same
job with a digital camera. Give it a try, and you'll be pleasantly
surprised at the results.
