    I agree. Closed source is like buying a radio with a welded shut case and no schematic. The radio would be a interesting as a cell phone or any other consumer

      phone or any other consumer appliance. A useful gadget maybe
      but you couldn't learn much from it

      The best known (by far) SDR software project is GNU Radio.
      It runs on just about every platform and people have used
      it for everything from basic FM receivers to more complex
      stuff like GPS receivers, "WIFI", radar transponders and
      over the air HD TV. The sound card's bandwidth limit does
      place restrictins on what you can do but within those
      limits GNU Radio should allow most anything you can think
      of.
