      Special Coverage

      Socialism 2006 Conference
June 22-25, 2006, New York City

Over 1500 people attended the 4 day Socialism 2006 conference in New
York, held at Columbia University, June 22-25.

See audio and photo coverage of the Saturday night rally and 4 of the
many panels at http://www.traprockpeace.org and a report with
      transcripts at http://www.socialistworker.org

Defense lawyer Lynne Stewart - who is facing 30 years in prison after
being unjustly convicted of aiding terrorism - joined Mustafa Ali,
founding member of the Committee on Solidarity for the New Movement
for Democracy in Egypt; former death row prisoner Shujaa Graham,
Mexican American Political Association President Nativo Lpez, and
International Socialist Review editor Ahmed Shawki as speakers to the
rally. Over 1000 attended the rally, which was moderated by Sherry
Wolf, a member of the International Socialist Review editorial
      board.

There were 3 days of panels and workshops; we picked 4 of the many
great programs to record. Please see the program list below.

Audio produced by Traprock is available for radio airplay, without
prior permission, provided that the radio station notifies Traprock
of the airing and provides attribution to Traprock Peace Center and
Socialism 2006 sponsors, and notes during broadcast that all rights
are reserved. All other public use requires prior permission.

Socialism 2006 was sponsored by the Center for Economic Research and
Social Change, publisher of International Socialist Review and
Haymarket Books. It was co-sponsored by the International Socialist
Organization, publisher of Socialist Worker and Obrero Socialista.

Audio programs and photos (all mp3 audio, recorded at 64 kbps mono):

You may hear the programs and download mp3's by right clicking on
      the audio links at http://www.traprockpeace.org/socialism_2006.html

      Military Recruitment" 63:26 minutes - 29.1 mg - June 23, 2006. (We
hope to add photos of this panel later.)

Annie Zirin and Michael Letwin on "Iraq: Graveyard of U.S.
      Imperialism?" 58:29 minutes - 26.8 mg - June 24, 2006.

Chuck asks, ... Now realy, Chuck, there are many anarchisms and many socialisms . A lot of American libertarians might see little problem with a missive

Now realy, Chuck, there are many 'anarchisms' and many 'socialisms'.

A lot of American libertarians might see little problem with a missive
from the KKK or nazis here (I would be angry myself, but it takes all
        sorts).

I for one have no problem, cosmically speaking, with some socialist
content on the list, though very much dependent on what brand of
socialism. Not all are inimicable to Anerchism.

Bakunin said "Freedom without socialism is privilege and injustice
Socialism without freedom is slavery and brutality"

Do I need to elaborate? I think not...

HI All - Thanks, Paul. I agree with your Bakunin quote. And to answer Chuck, the great bulk of the material from the conference that I posted had little to do

HI All - Thanks, Paul. I agree with your Bakunin quote. And to answer Chuck, the great
bulk of the material from the conference that I posted had little to do with socialism.
Lynne Stewart, as an antiwar movement attorney who herself is facing 30 years in prison
for calling a press conference for a client; Jeremy Scahill, speaking on so-called
humanitarian intervensions as covers for US imperialism; Nativo Lopez on the immigration
rights movement; Elizabeth Wrigley field and a panel on the US studente movement; and
Annie Zirin and Michael Letwin on US imperialism and the antiwar movement are all well
worth listenting to, whether "socialist" or "anarchist." Some anarchists came to the
conference, by the way, and enjoyed the panels. Our agreements are much greater than
our disagreements, in my opinion, and pale in comparision to our differences with
capitalists and the US government, for example.

          Best to all,
