Citizens in Maan pledge allegiance
AMMAN (JT) About 80 citizens of the southern town of Maan
on Thursday sent a cable to His Majesty King Abdullah
denouncing what they described as "the acts of a few people
who take Islam as a pretext to perpetrate anarchist actions
and harm Jordan's security and stability," the Jordan News
Agency, Petra, reported.
Petra listed the names of 78 signatories to the letter. The
agency reported that the signers were people from the
different walks of life.
In the letter, the citizens pledged allegiance to the King,
stressing that the people of Maan reject all actions meant
to harm the country. They said those who commit these acts
"represent only themselves."
On Tuesday, an official source confirmed that a resident of
Maan had been wounded by Highway Patrol officers when he
opened fire on the police who were chasing him after he
failed to pull over as instructed. The motorist was taken to
hospital for treatment but later escaped.
The motorist was identified by authorities as Mohammad
Shalabi, wanted by police on other charges. Shalabi is said
to be still at large.
