Israeli conscientious objector jailed for 21 days
TEL AVIV (AFP) An Israeli conscientious objector, Yigal
Rosenberg, was jailed for 21 days for refusing to answer his
draft call, the Israeli pacifist group New Profile said
The 18-year-old from Haifa in northern Israel refused to
serve in the army on social and political grounds,
including his opposition to Israel's occupation of the
Palestinian territories, the group said.
He was sentenced on Sunday.
Last week, another 18-year-old, a member of a small
anarchist group, was sentenced to 28 days for refusing his
Rosenberg was the second person jailed from a group of 62
school-leavers who announced last September they would
refuse to participate in the occupation of the Palestinians
during their obligatory military service.
Thirteen Israelis, either conscripts of reservists, have
been jailed this year for refusing to serve in the West Bank
or the Gaza Strip, New Profile said.
The Israeli army does not recognise the right of men to
refuse military service on conscientious grounds.
The army was shaken late last month by a petition by 52
reserve officers and other ranks who refused to serve in the
Palestinian territories, saying they would not participate
in the oppression of the Palestinian people.
So far, 149 soldiers have signed up to the petition, which
has sparked growing concern in both the military top brass
