RNC protesters celebrate last year's arrests by suing the
      city

A group of protesters taken into police custody during the
Republican National Convention last year celebrated the
anniversary of their arrests yesterday by suing the city.

Lawyers Paul Hetznecker and Lawrence Kasner filed suit in
U.S. District Court on behalf of dozens of people arrested
in a West Philadelphia warehouse where puppets, signs and
banners were being made as part of protest activities.

"The lawsuit alleges that demonstrators were subject to
preventive detention and malicious prosecution," the lawyers
      said.

"The warehouse defendants suffered months of hearings before
the cases were thrown out last November," the lawyers said
      in a statement.

"A year later, there are still nine cases stemming from the
RNC protests that have yet to go to trial.

"The DA has delayed eight of those cases in an attempt to
      impose harsher treatment."

Some federal suits have already been filed, but most of the
70 protesters arrested in the warehouse wanted to wait until
the anniversary to file their actions.

About 400 protesters were arrested during the convention.

Although police testimony and videotapes showed some acts of
violence, the charges did not hold up in court.

City and police officials have declined to comment on the
      suits. *
