      ON MEDITATION: "What is a rational explanation of meditation, Swamiji?"
      an engineer put the question to the Master.

      Instantly the Master replied, "Ohji, do not run after rational
      explanations. Have faith. The intellect is a is a great hindrance also.
      You can infer the existence of God in so many ways but you should not try
      to, overstep the limits of the intellect. Then it will become a
      hindrance. Here faith alone will help you. What form of meditation do you
      like most-with or without form?"

      "Formless, Swamiji."

      "Were you born an engineer?"

      "No, Swamiji, I studied for a number of years at the high school and at
      college and then became an engineer."

      "That is right-step by step. Similarly in Yoga also you cannot jump at
      once to the formless Brahman. A form is necessary for the purpose of
      meditating on the formless Being. Meditate on abstract ideas like bliss
      and peace, on the form of the sky, on air, or on all-pervading light. The
      mind wants something upon which to lean. And the sky or air or light will
      provide that. Meditate on bliss or peace. This is formless meditation."

      "Well, Swamiji, I have another doubt. Can a man not lead a good virtuous
      life, be charitable, truthful and noble, work for the welfare of the
      community and die a good man, without aspiring for anything beyond this
      life? He too will be completely satisfied with such a life."

      "A dog is completely satisfied with its life," replied the Master. "Is
      such satisfaction your goal? If you lead a virtuous life and die, you will
      die as a good man, not as a saint. You will not attain liberation."

      "What is the need to attain liberation, Swamiji?"

      "To understand this you should resort to Satsang and the study of
      scriptures. An intellect that is clouded with all sorts of desires and
      evil impressions will not be able to grasp even the need for liberation.
      Such an intellect is demoniacal. Read the Gita, attend Satsang and listen
      to the discourses of saints and Sannyasins. Then discrimination will
      arise in you. You will understand that this world is full of pain and
      sorrow. The bungalow, the motor car, the petty position and the small
      salary that you now have will not satisfy you when discrimination dawns.
      Your aspiration will grow. You will want to liberate yourself.

      "What great labour goes into the preparation of a microscope lens. Only
      after a lot of grinding are you able to peep into the beyond. Similarly,
      after a lot of study and Satsang only will your intellect even think of
      the Beyond.

      "You should develop dispassion. That is the first requisite. You do not
      possess the dispassion that the little boy of five-Nachiketas of the
      Kathopanishad-possessed. He refused even the longest span of life, the
      greatest amount of wealth, an army of the most beautiful damsels and the
      best celestial car. He wanted liberation alone. He knew that all these
      things would only wear out his senses and produce weakness and old age.
      You would remain satisfied even with a millionth part of it.

      The Lord of Death says, 'Such people I crush between my fingers again and
      again'. He who does not yearn for liberation, who does not diligently
      apply himself to Sadhana, will suffer endless miseries birth after birth.

      "Have you peace of mind now? How can you have it when your mind is full
      of desires? Study the Gita. Be free from desires, egoism, 'I'-ness and
      'mine'-ness. Develop faith and devotion. Then you will attain wisdom,
      and with that peace. Of that peace you do not even know now.

      "How difficult it is to cultivate dispassion! People are interested only
      in a little hoarding, some comforts and conveniences, a wife and children.
      You have hundreds of good thousands of rich men. You have men too. But
      how many saints have you? Even real aspirants are rare in the world now.
      Even in your category of 'good men' there are grades. How many good men
      have you got of Gandhiji's type?

      "What do your good men do? They may be truthful and noble, they may be
      charitable and pious. But even they will be selfish to the core. They
      will hoard wealth and look after only their wives and children. Will they
      feel that all children are their own? When they bring sweetmeats from the
      bazaar, will they give some to other children first. No, because they
      have no knowledge of the truth that the one Self dwells in all beings.
      Unless this understanding of the truth dawns in them, unless they meditate
      upon the supreme Reality and strive to realise It, how can they develop
      renunciation and the true spirit of selfless service?

      "To be a good man is no doubt a better ideal than to be merely a human
      animal full of vicious qualities. But it is only a means to an end; it is
      only a step nearer the goal, not the end or the goal itself. The goal is
      Self-realisation or liberation. In order to achieve this you must be good
      and do good. And you must do still more-you must cultivate
      discrimination, dispassion and a correct attitude of life. You must
      meditate, do Japa and Kirtan and study the scriptures. Then by the Grace
      of God you will attain the goal of life."
