- Jan 18, 2004Yes, I have the DVD - a DVD, anyway. -)
Mine is a Chinese bootleg copy that I got through eBay, but from a US
source.
I say booteg, but, in fact, it may be completely legal, considering that
the film is so old that the copyright may have expired. I dunno.
Whatever be the case, my copy is so so. The source print is not too bad,
except here and there. The sound is okay. But there are only four tracks,
which is not nearly enough for a film of that length. There are subtitles
in Chinese and English (that you can remove). The English subtitles read
as if they were taken down phonetically by someone whose mother tongue is
not English, with funny results sometimes. I have a inkling that the
release was meant in part for people who want to use DVDs to learn English
as a second-language.
There is an alternate - the film was recently released in the Criterion
collection. That is a deluxe product - top-quality, but top-prices too,
around 40 to 45 dollars US, but worth it, I am sure.
I hope this helps.
