      while cruising around the web gallery of art http://www.wga.hu/index1.html ;
      I found some Hungarian images showing flag shapes:

      MS Master: the mount of olives; at the gate is a flag with two tails from the upper corner of the rectangle body section. The crucifixion; pale cream banner behind Jesus has two tails from the upper corner of the rectagle body section. The Resurrection; long banner shape haung from its upper support from a cross shaped banner pole.

      Master Paul of Locse: High Alter of St George; in one of the panel picture is a man in armor holding the staff of a banner, banner is black triangleur shape.

      Master Thomas de Coloswar: Crucifixion; many banner shapes: long rectangle banner shapes, narrow long rectangles, double point banner; single point banners; rectangle banner wtih a singer tail from the upper corner.

      Minitarist, german: Bellifortis; rider in drawing is sigismind king of Hungary 1387-1437, carrying a two tailed banner.

      Miniaturist, Hungarian; Pontifical; church has two banners flying for the steeple.

      Fine Arts in Hungary website http://hungart.euroweb.hu/ has:

      (Hungarian) Illiminated Chronicle: title page painted in 1360 for King lajos (louis) the Great; at the bottom it show some shield shapes; 1st one: horizontal bars on one side and fleurs on the other side; 2nd one: red background with papal cross on green mount; 3rd one: red background with possibly a mermaid on it.

      Anjou Legendarium: scenes from the legend of St Ladislas
      first image show 2 flags 1 with a single tail, second with 3 tails.

      Joannes Corvinus, Son of King Matthias, entering Vienna, 1480s; from the codex Heroica by Philstatus illuminated by Attavante degli Attavanti (florentine painter) shows his shield, him holding a spear with a small red banner and one of his attendants hold another spear with a banner with 2 tails, this banner's design is the same as his shield which is the flag of Matthias' black army.

      King Matthias, 1488 from the Chronica Hungarorum by Janos Thuroczi: shows his shield or a banner hanging over a window, split in four parts; TL has red papal cross on green mount over a white background, TR has red and white horizontal stripes, BL has red background with a lion rampant (facing sidways on back legs with a gold crown), and BR has a blue background with a black raven holding a sabre (or scroll) in its claws and a ring in its beak.

      Letter King Lajos II (detail) dated 11th November 1523 King Lajos II accords the coat of arms to Mihaly Szerdehelyi Imrefy for his services. Teh size of the coat of arms on the page is 129 x 188 mm. Okay no flags but would this make a cool illumination to start from for a hungarian awards of arms.
