- Ataman is period. It actually has three forms:
<vataman">, <votaman"> and <ataman">. It does appear to refer to a military
leader. A reference dated to 1294 indicates it could be a captain on a (sea)
Note: the <"> refers to the "hard sign", a letter that was probably an
almost-vowel, a super-short vowel, sort of a "uh" sound. You can just
disregard it as you try to pronounce the word, thus: [ah-tah-MAHN].
