      Dr Olena Smyntyna
Head of Department of Archaeology and Ethnology of Ukraine
      Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University

      Session abstract:
Spatial organisation of hunter-gatherers according to ethnographic and
      archaeological data

Subject of current session is natural-geographic, social, historical and
ethnic peculiarities of spatial organisation of all spheres of prehistoric
and contemporary societies of hunters and gatherers. Their daily life,
household and subsistence strategies, social interaction, ritual
activities, aesthetic and symbolic values would be examined in its
frameworks. Taking into account specific features of Early Prehistoric
population livelihood systems, different levels of such analysis seem to be
fruitful, such as territorial (dwelling - living floor ? settlement ?
foraging territory ? living space), temporal (daily ? seasonal ? year-round
      ? life-long ? generational), social (individual - family - community - kin
etc), purposeful (household, subsistence, ritual, aesthetic etc.) and
      others.

Mechanism by which different levels and forms of space exploitation are
fixed in social and ethnic memory of hunter-gatherers is subject of special
      attention.

      Sincerely yours,
      Olena Smyntyna
