No idea, but modern batiks are made using either bees wax-parafin
combo or straight parafin over patterned colth and then overdying
it. Another way is doing the overdye first and then doing a "tea
wash" of a ligher clolor either at a lukewarm or cold temperature so
it doesn't affect the stronger dye. This is especially effective with
a overdye of brilliant blue and a tea wash of rose at either lukewarm
or warm temperature. It makes a gorgeous rich purple with rose
designs. add the white vinegar for a light rose, salt for a deeper
light rose and yellow viegar for an orangish-light crimson red.
You lay newspaper overtop and iron, then repeat with fresh
newspapers until all the bees wax or parafin is gone. Its like doing
an iron on design, only reversing the process to remove instead of
      adhere.
Thats the benefit of a pst girlfriend who followed the Dead
for a little while and sold tye die t-shirts to survive.
