Subject: [sig] Submissions and the COH

I really do enjoy heraldry and have been a local and baronial herald. So this comes from someone who both enjoys/supports the COH attempts to give us good heraldry and frustrated by those same attempts. A few personal observations.
They are not professional heralds but volunteers trying their best to give us good heraldry. Each commentator buys or obtains their own reference works. Hence the need to provide documentation.
SCA heraldry has been based on Western European heraldry, very few heralds have any knowledge of Slavic or other types of heraldry. Yes most commentators have a bias towards what they know. Slowly, very slowly, more are being introduced to non-European heraldry and even more slowly is non-European heraldry becoming accepted and registered. Remember most heralds have a small personal library of reference works to check and those are mostly on western Europe.
I've had my own battles with the COH both my personal name and device and with those I've helped as a local herald. It can be very frustrating. Registered heraldry is the only portion of the SCA where authenticity is required. My personal feeling is most heralds just don't know enough about other systems of heraldry to make an accurate judgment on what is presented to them and use what they are familiar with to decide.
Finally unless a registered name/device is required to hold an official position there is no requirement to have such registered. So go ahead and use it. But for the long run the battles with the COH is worthwhile as more and more heralds will be exposed to different styles of heraldry and they will become more readily accepted.
