Greenpeace marks its 10th anniversary in Southeast Asia: calls on public to take action for a green and peaceful future

Jakarta 27 November 2010 - Greenpeace today marked the 10th anniversary of its presence in Southeast Asia with simultaneous public events in Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines calling upon citizens of the region to Turn the Tide in favour of a green and peaceful future.

Greenpeace established a regional office in Southeast Asia in 2000 and has been campaigning to protect forests, promote renewable energy, advocate sustainable agriculture and to stop water pollution ever since.

“Southeast Asia is one of the key battlegrounds where the fight to save the planet will ultimately be won or lost. The furious pursuit of economic growth at all costs by Southeast Asian countries over the last ten years has resulted in some of the worst cases of environmental abuse and destruction we have ever seen. This makes Greenpeace’s mission to protect the region from further ecological ruin and to be a rallying point for awareness and action even more cruical,” said Harry Surjadi, Board member of Greenpeace Southeast Asia and Indonesia.

Greenpeace collaborated with Green Radio in Jakarta to stage a unique radio-thon, a 72 hour non-stop radio broadcast from Taman Menteng, Jakarta that began on Thursday 25 November 2010. Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo and Indonesia Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hassan made opening remarks followed by live interviews with campaigners, supporters and volunteers, who responded to callers from all over the country. The event is being aired live on 89.2 FM and www.greenpeace.or.id <http://www.greenpeace.or.id>. This event ends today, 28 November 2010. Greenpeace has also set up an expo at the Taman Menteng site, which has been transformed at night into a concert venue for live acoustic performances by popular Indonesian bands who are supporting the Greenpeace Anniversary event.

“Greenpeace owes its success to our independence and our commitment to safeguard our environment and our future. It is thanks to our supporters, volunteers and allies in other non-governmental organizations and people’s movements that we have won battles against existing and proposed polluting industrial facilities such as dirty coal and dangerous nuclear power plants.” said Nur Hidayati, Country Representative of Greenpeace Southeast Asia in Indonesia.

“We have championed and secured landmark policy changes and creative solutions in the areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency, ecological waste management, sustainable agriculture and forest protection, while increasing transparency in the way public decisions are made about the environment,” added Hidayati.

In Thailand, to mark the 10th anniversary, architecture students of Chulalongkorn University today created an art installation to highlight Greenpeace campaigns. The event also included a model of an eco-town, a Greenpeace T-shirt catwalk, and games like ‘Unplugged’ and ‘Ride to light up’ attended by hundreds of supporters and volunteers. The celebration will conclude with a six hour music concert in Manila, Philippines.

Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace.
