Group Description

This group is comprised of concerned and dedicated Bernese Mt. Dog owners, foster care families and professionals who are seeking ways to help their Shy and/or Fear Aggressive Bernese Mt. Dog.

Our goal is to provide dog friendly training and behavior modification suggestions using only positive-reinforcement. In addition, there are articles and resources in our file section that will help you understand and manage aggressive behaviors and suggestions for you to teach fearful dogs new skills and coping strategies.

Fearful/Shy behavior is not uncommon. Sometimes shyness is the result of specific breed tendencies, possible mistreatment or a lack of socialization/exposure during critical developmental stages of the puppy. Often it is a combination of some or all of these factors. Temperament is part genetic, part early learning or a combination of the two. As dogs mature, they become more aware of their environment and may become wary of new situations. These behavior changes generally become evident at around 6 months, the beginning of canine adolescence.

A fearful dog may actively seek to avoid what is scary or threatening OR the dog may choose to actively drive off *who or what* that is frightening him with aggressive displays of behavior. Aggressing dogs are not "bad." All animals have a tendency to aggress; aggression is normal. Whether your dog is presenting as shy or aggressively, usually, the reasons for the behavior are the same...fear.

The good news is that it IS possible to change the behavior of the adult canine. Keep in mind however that the earlier intervention begins, the more successful you will be in shaping or changing your dogs's behavior.

We, who offer suggestions, are doing our best to help with a problem. Sometimes however, it may be advised that you work with a trained professional.
