I was so excited to hear about this group from the latest issue of the
SFBC's tube times! Hooray!
My wife Nicole and I have two kids, Jula who's 2.5 years old and Tenzin
who's almost 5 months old. Jula's a bike riding pro, she's been riding
with both of us in a CoPilot seat since she was 1. She loves it, singing
and talking about everything as we cruise along. Tenzin of course is too
young just yet. I'm chomping at the bit waiting for him to grow to
helmet-ready size :)
We sold our car 2 years ago after we realized that we only moved it for
street cleaning and it collected more parking tickets than it was worth.
For awhile we ran all of our hauling errands (groceries, etc) with a kids
bike trailer (keeping Jula in the CoPilot) but the trailer proved to be
kind of a pain. About a year ago we bought a used Xtracycle setup off
craigslist and totally fell in love with it. I haul all sorts of stuff
all over the city on a regular basis, sometimes up to 200 lbs worth!
Nicole's birthday present this year was an Xtracycle Radish of her own
which she's been making good use of in the past few weeks. This morning
we rode up to the pumpkin patch and hauled several large pumpkins home
with Jula in tow as well.
Next summer, when my son is old enough to ride, we're planning on doing
some bike camping trips and have been hoping to connect with other
families that would be interested in joining us. There are lots of great
places to camp within 20 miles of the city that would be fun to bike to.
This year I've been keeping a blog about living car free in the city
*with kids*. It's been a challenge but we're glad to take it on. You can
read it here: http://humans4cars0.blogspot.com/
We're really excited to connect with other biking families. Has there
been any talk of a group ride? Gathering during Sunday Streets on JFK
somewhere would be an easy choice, anyone game?
