Just to make sure we're walking about the same meeting. The planning
meeting in Scrum consists of two parts
- accepting the product backlog items
- splitting product backlog items into sprint backlog items (tasks)
Although most teams prefer doing a separate backlog grooming session,
any estimation of non estimated product backlog items can also take
place in the first part.
Product Owner involvement in part one is a must have.
PO involvement in part two is between should have and nice to have.
Most of the time the teams I've seen do not need further clarification
but sometimes they do need it. I would say even if PO is not present
during the second part he should be available to attend or give quick
answers if the teams requests.
