This came out to us today from my employer. The only part of it I disagree with is stopping mail delivery, as that tells people that you will be out of town.

As employees leave for vacation and/or the holidays, it is important
to secure your personal and company valuables while unattended.
Historically, we’ve had an increase of theft during extended facility
      closures.

Below are some quick “reminders” for ensuring the safety of your
      valuables.

      WORK

      * If you have a laptop computer, please store it in a safe and secure
location. Do not leave it in the docking station or attached to a
security cable. The best solution is taking the laptop home.
      * Lock your desks, storage rooms, office doors, file cabinets, and
      supply cabinets.
      * Remove personal belongings from your desk and work areas. Take them
home or secure them in your locked desk or file cabinet.
      * If feasible and appropriate, turn your desktop computer off.
      * Secure all proprietary data in locked cabinets.

      AWAY FROM WORK

      * At shopping malls-don't have valuable items in open view in your
      car.
      * Park in well lighted areas.
      * If you have done a lot of shopping have someone from mall security
      escort you to your car.
      * Make sure you lock all home doors-have a spare key well concealed in
      the garage.
      * Make sure all your exterior lights are working.
      * If you are going to be away from home for the holidays, notify the
Security Company that monitors your home system.

      * If you are going to be away for more than a week:
      * Stop your mail or have someone pick it up
      * Make sure your batteries in the fire detectors in the house are
      new
      * Arrange to have some interior lights come on and off randomly

Thank you and have a safe and happy holiday.
