      October 2010
Philmont Training Center Course Calendar for 2011 is in the works!
The 2011 PTC Course Calendar is ready for print and will be out to councils and
on scouting.org by October 29, 2010. Mark your calendar and make plans to attend
one or more courses at the beautiful Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New
      Mexico.
The courses will be laid out in a collegiate-style, giving prospective attendees
the opportunity to make plans to follow a track from beginning to end. Each
course will be illustrated using criteria such as 1) Intended Attendee 2)
Prerequisites 3) Expected Outcomes 4) Next Logical Course(s).
New courses at PTC in 2011 will include: Venturing Youth Leadership Summit,
Tiger Cub to Webelos and Teaching Ethical Decisions: Coaching and Mentoring.
Each of these courses is expected to be wait-listed. Be sure to get registered
as soon as the course opens for registration.
      REQUIRED TRAINING UPDATE
Please help spread the word that the required training pilot period has changed.
Originally intended to end December 31, 2010 has now been extended through 2011.
The 20 pilot councils will continue their hard work in defining the future of
required top leader training in 2011 to ensure a smooth rollout to all of our
councils in the future. However, local councils should consider this to be a
part of their program goals for 2011, as it has already been successful in many
councils across the country that has increased their training percentages. If
you have further questions concerning this initiative, please do not hesitate to
contact Christopher Smith at the national office for more information via e-mail
at christopher.smith@... or by phone at 972-580-2417.

      for each:

      Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills
As a restated reminder, if you feel you have all the skills required in
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills it may not be necessary to take the
course. Anyone who feels they can demonstrate all of the skills for Tenderfoot,
Second Class and First Class should contact their District Training Chair and
schedule a one-on-one session with a member of the training team.
This statement also applies to Venturing Youth (over 18 years of age) who are
able to demonstrate outdoor leader skills to an IOLS Certified Course
      Instructor.
PLC and NAYLE: A Success for Philmont in 2010
The Philmont Leadership Challenge (PLC) was conducted during the fall conference
week at near capacity. PLC is an experiential course using the leadership skills
      taught at Wood Badge.
The 2010 National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) is now history.
NAYLE was open to Venturing members for the first time and had participants
attend all 8 weeks. NAYLE will be offered for four sessions in 2011 at Philmont.
Pending approval, it will also be offered in each of the regions. Sites and
dates for the region courses have not yet been determined.
